Union Hill Middle School Helps Community Food Bank of New Jersey

The Community Foodbank of New Jersey welcomed two 8th grade classes led by Mrs. Sarah Ghys and Mrs. Karen Sawyer from Union Hill Middle School on June 13th to volunteer in the 285,000-square-foot warehouse in Hillside, New Jersey. Students arrived at the facility and were escorted into the warehouse, where they were given volunteer duties for their morning shift. The groups were separated, with one group bagging pasta and packing it into boxes, while the second group sorted food items, packed and arranged according to categories, before weighing and stacking them onto shipping pallets. Students were able to see their hard work pay off when the employees thanked them for volunteering their time and discussed how the food and household items were distributed to families in need. Students agreed that it was a rewarding experience and shared their happiness at being able to participate in this community service-based field trip.
